Whittlebury Hall - The Spa

As you may know if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, I visited Whittlebury Hall Hotel & Spa for a mini spa break with my mom, sister and aunty. We managed to get a fantastic deal on our spa treatment and over night stay and I really wanted to review the whole experience as it was my first time at a spa! There really is a lot to talk about so I've decided to spilt the review into three parts - the first being The Spa. I will also be talking about The Hotel and The Food in two other separate posts.

We arrived just after 10am and were promptly checked in at the hotel. We left our luggage in reception to be taken to our rooms and headed off to the spa area. Again we were quickly booked in and given our personalised schedule sheet which noted our lunch time slot and our treatment time as well as other useful information. We were also given our locker key which came in the form of an electronic rubber bracelet. The bracelet could also be used to access the locker rooms and spa area which was locked.

We soon changed into our swimwear, packed our belongings into our lockers, slipped into our robes and walked to the main spa area. Once you arrive in the spa there is a hydrotherapy pool with fountains and jacuzzi bubbles around the outsides. There were also 2 warm beds, a warm bench, 2 foot baths, a water fountain and cups, flannels, and numerous showers, saunas and steam rooms.

We tried everything in this area apart from the 'Shower Experience' Which featrued two showers that each produced very hot and very cold water. There are 3 steam rooms to choose from; The Caldarium, The Crystal steam room and The Salt steam room. The Caldarium is the coolest of the 3 and in my opinion the most comfortable. I found the crystal steam room incredibly hot and couldnt bare to be in there for more than 30 seconds whereas this was my sisters favourite room to sit in!

After some time in the steam rooms we moved onto the saunas. We had the choice of 2 saunas; The Sanarium and the Crystal Sauna. These were both very hot but as it was a dry heat I much preferred this and could easily spend 10 minutes in the crystal sauna.

We had spent plenty of time in the heat so we then moved onto the 'ice experience'. Next to the saunas there is an ice cave where fresh ice spills into a basin for guests to rub over themselves. This is not as torturous as it sounds and is actually very relaxing after spending so much time in the heat. I also thoroughly enjoyed the ice cold showers but only for a few seconds at a time. One thing I didn't particularly love was the ice cold bucket of water which is positioned in its own area for us to pour over ourselves or each other.

After a couple of hours in this area we started to get peckish so headed out for some complimentary ice water and fruit. There are a few stations all over the spa where guests can help them selves to several types of fruit and different flavoured water. There is also a bar in the spa area where you can buy hot drinks, smoothes and light meals.

We then moved onto the larger pool area which also features a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi although the jacuzzi was unfortunately closed the weekend we stayed. This pool is cooler than we other one which came as quite a shock at first but didn't take much time at all to get used to. I'm pretty sure this area is included with a regular stay as the hotel and we didn't spent too much time here as we wanted to spend as much time as possible relaxing in the spa area.

There was much more to the spa than we first realised. After lunch time (which I will talk about in detail in my food post) we decided to have a look around. We soon found another relaxing area with tables and chairs and complimentary magazines. From this area guests can access the sleeping room, the whisper area which has water beds, the shop and the treatment rooms.

The shop was quite large with multiple testers on display for us to try everything out. There were several brands for sale, some of which I'd never heard of before and there were also some very affordable products for sale which surprised me. Although I didn't purchase anything there was always a sales assistant on hand to help.

From here we explored the dark sleep room which features several single beds with duvets and the whisper area which boasts waterbeds and birdcage chairs. We didn't really spend too long in these areas either as we were keen to get back into the spa but I couldn't recommend testing out the water beds enough as they were just so comfortable!

After a little while longer in the spa it was time to head up for our treatments. We picked the treatments a few weeks before and we had all opted for the back, neck and shoulder massage. We were each promptly called for our treatments and shown to our rooms by our masseuses. I was actually a bit underwhelmed by my treatment room. I've never had a massage before so I wasn't really sure what to expect but I thought it was quite a drab space that almost resembled a hospital room. Once I was comfortable my masseuses asked if I would like the relaxing oil or the invigorating oil. She explained some of the ingredients and what each oil smelled like to help me chose which I wanted, I opted for the relaxing oil.

The massage itself was incredible. Although I have nothing else to compare it to I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely go for one again. The treatment lasted around 25 minutes and honestly flew by. Throughout the massage I was given the option for the masseuse to increase or decrease the pressure which was a nice touch as I can see how it might be painful for some people.

This was the end of our spa day and it was now time to go back to our rooms to get ready for dinner. Although we chose to leave the spa before 7pm its actually open until 8:30pm weeknights and 6:30pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Overall I really enjoyed the whole experience. Everywhere seemed very clean and refreshments were constantly repalced. Although I wasn't impressed with my treatment room, the massage itself was incredibly relaxing. If we were to see a similar deal I would not hesitate to return to Whittlebury Hall for a spa day!

Have you ever been to Whittlebury Hall or another spa hotel? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Thanks for reading!
